ALTA was founded by Michela Barone Lumaga and Lovisa Lindström in 2022. The practice is engaged in architectural, urban and interior design projects.

Design exploration and a context based approach are the roots of the studio philosophy. Alta's projects value the idea that daily life is precious and buildings should support social interactions, be open and adaptable for change.

Lovisa and Michela have contributed to a dozen building projects in Stockholm, London, Milan and Amsterdam and are currently lecturers at KTH, combining their work at ALTA with academic teaching. The studio believes in a collaborative practice with a good quality of professional life and engaged clients.

BIO

Lovisa Lindström has worked for an extensive period in both the UK and in Sweden. In London she worked at Acme architecture and muf architecture/art as a Project Architect for public spaces. She was creative lead in several competitions - Science museum, London, and Fell Foot visitor centre that the office won among others. Latest she comes from Sandellsandberg architects in Stockholm, Sweden, where she worked as Senior Architect on large scale projects ranging from kindergarten, residential projects and office space. Lovisa has worked successfully in all phases of a project from sketch to developed design to construction detailing and thinks that each phase has its own unique challenges and enjoyments.

Lovisa holds Masters degree in Architecture and Interior design from London Metropolitan University and Masters degree in Architecture from LTH University. Her degree project and thesis ‘And the seasons go round and round’ discussed weather as an architecutural context and was awarded several stipends - best degree project of 2012 among others. She is currently teaching at KTH school of Architecture in Stockholm as an adjunct combined with running Alta Architecture together with Michela.

Michela Barone Lumaga has experience in design and management on a range of projects varying from residential developments and office headquarters to public and invitational competitions. Before starting ALTA Architecture Michela worked with Sandellsandberg in Stockholm, where, among other projects, she developed Boverket's new headquarters in Karlskrona, a building in structural wood aiming for both LEED and BREAM classifications and a large student housing complex in Skellefteå. Michela has worked internationally both in Europe and the US, collaborating with Jo Coenen Architects in Holland, Cino Zucchi in Italy, Michael Sorkin in New York.

She holds Masters degrees in Architecture and Urban Planning from Politecnico di Milano and the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. During her studies at MIT, she collaborated with the Brazilian government in Rio de Janeiro to implement design workshops in favelas. As a Fellow for the TATA Center for Technology and Design (MIT Energy Initiative), she implemented a digitally fabricated, masonry-based, Pilot Home for India. Her thesis, “Public by Design: Auto-fabrication for a Contemporary Urban Physiognomy”, proposes urban objects that can be designed and built by citizens. As an educator, she held teaching assistant positions in design studios both at MIT and at Politecnico di Milano and she is currently an adjunct professor at KTH in Stockholm.
