VADSTENA HOUSING

During the 16th century the town of Vadstena was one of the most important pilgrimages destination in Europe due to its Bridgettine abbey. The quiet demenaor of the village brick and stone building, its low density and large grassy yards enclosed by low stone walls inspired in the building’s choice of materials and site layout. As the site is very near the water it was decided to equip the houses with large roof terraces where the residents could enjoy lakeviews. The higher stair volume necessary to reach the roof became both an opportunity to create an unique formal expression in facade and to create double height studio-like spaces on the second floor.
